Chapter 4

Simon decided safe was better than sorry, and pulled over in a shaded area of the gravel shoulder, halfway to Edgar’s house. Paul glanced at him. “Why are you stopping?”

“I need to call… Mark.” Aaron was still off doing something political in DC, according to the group text from their Alpha that morning. No need to disturb him when the pack Second would do.

Simon tapped the contact. Mark’s gruff voice answered, “Yeah? What’s up? How’s Paul?”

“Doing okay. It’s been—” He didn’t want to say rough with Paul right there listening, and maybe that wasn’t the right word for this unpredictable mix of emotions Paul was going through. “—a couple of complicated days.”

“You need help? I could send Lucas. He’s off work another couple of days and grouchy about taking it easy.”

“No. Not yet. But one of the people Paul knows here is asking us to do a welfare check on an old guy who might be a lone wolf.”

“A what?” Simon could hear Mark’s attention sharpen. “Tell me about him. And why’d they ask you?”

“As for why, the guy recognized my face.”

“Ah. Damned TV show. I knew that would come back to bite us.”

“Yeah.” They hadn’t been able to refuse a request from mastermind Rick Brown, top Alpha of the Council, but Simon would’ve loved to go back to the day when only other wolves knew who he was. Ah, well, back then, they also mostly wanted to kill me. Progress, right?

“Tell me about the wolf.”

“Edgar Daugherty. We haven’t met him yet. Don’t even know for sure he’s one of us, though the vet had good evidence in favor. Older guy, a loner, retired firefighter, lives alone. The doc says he’s been refusing contact or visits for a few months, and sounds weird over the phone.”

“Hm. There’s no pack that claims the Woods Hole area. I checked before you left. Green Bay is closest. I’ll ask if they have a lone wolf left to round up. Stay put.”

Mark hung up, and the force of that command, Second to Fifth, had Simon slouching in his seat to wait.

“What now?” Paul asked. “What did he say?”

Simon sometimes forgot his human mate couldn’t hear the other end of a phone conversation the way a wolf could. “He’s going to check and see if the nearest pack knows this guy, before we go barging in.”

“Oh. Makes sense, I guess.”

“The Council told all the packs to gather in their loners, so if he’s theirs, he’s their problem.”

“But he’s a friend of Doc’s,” Paul said. “So we should at least check up on him.”

Of course Paul would say that. Simon figured he didn’t need to get into an argument unless pushed to it, so he grinned. “In the meantime, we have the perfect excuse to sit here and make out for a while.”

“In full view?”

“How many cars have passed us lately?”

“One?”

“I like those odds.” He put a hand under Paul’s chin but waited, letting Paul control things. Paul leaned over and kissed him, slowly and intently.
